World Theatre Day

This holiday was initiated by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), which you can think of as the “global family” or “connector” for theater communities worldwide. ITI is the largest performing arts organization globally with strong ties to UNESCO. Its mission is to connect theater professionals organizations enthusiasts across cultures promote cultural exchange theater development.

Why March 27th? There’s an interesting story here: ITI decided back in 1961 that there should be a World Theatre Day celebrated annually from 1962 onwards—and they chose March 27th intentionally because on that same day in 1962 ITI organized an important international theater event—the Theatre of Nations—in Paris! This festival gathered top troupes works from around world making date historically significant richly international.
